Something to Crow About

I have been studying chickens; how to raise them for egg laying and entertainment. I am excited by the prospect of having small flock. These fine specimens came from Bilbliodyssey.

Dog Man

This is what a German Shorthaired Pointer named Mack looks like made into the people's bed because he refused to get out. He continued to nap for 20 minutes after being photographed.

Early Corn

Our 24 acre field of corn is standing green and tall at 5 feet. The deer run in and out of their endless salad bar and the rabbits and turkeys inhabit the fringe at the field's edge. These beautiful seed packages are from the Smithsonian digital collection. The images on the packages say so much about the glory and hope that once existed in American farms and gardens, before the corporate industrialization of food.

Back to the Horn

After a week of family duties and power gardening I'm back at the helm of the StudioHorn. Expect more posts after a week of data and image collecting.... PS - thanks to everyone for letting me know that you are enjoying this meandering blog!

Fill'er Up

Image from Treehugger.com. Today I went on an hour long car ride with 4 other people, small car, super squinchy fit, but oddly satisfying. It was good to feel like the car was at maximum capacity and that our car pool prevented at least 2 additional cars from making the same trip. Plus the social aspect was entertaining and couldn't have happened if everyone had been in their isolation mobiles of recent history. The future will be filled with opportunities for changing the ways that we do things...

Edward Bawden

I'm doing some research for a project that I am doing with my old friend and brilliant still life stylist, Jeffrey Miller. We are using British illustrator Edward Bawden as inspiration on an ad campaign that we are doing together. Today I'm painting pumpkins, leaves, mirrors and snowflakes with Mr. Bawden in mind. aperfect way to spend a rainy Sunday morning.

Green Days

Pine Plains is a study in green. Mowing is comical as the grasses grow an inch within 15 minutes of the futile chop. Currently the rye is going to seed and the thistle is threatening to conquer the high pasture.

Doctor Seuss Commutes, or Horton Hears a Horn

My bike was stolen last night. My last bike was stolen on September 11. Yes, that 9/11. So in my search to find yet another commuter bike I have been searching for a folding model. I came across this prototype at ecogeek.org. I have yet to find my dream ride but I'll post the winner. Carbon neutral despite crime, on wheel or hoof.

Cartoon by Mack

After a long weekend in the country with our german shorthaired pointer, Mack, who retrieved baby rabbits several times a day, this New Yorker cartoon seems darkly perfect. No baby bunnies were harmed, just gently carried all over the damn place. Humans returned them to their no longer secret nest. BunnyLips has been tethered.
